What makes a great cruise?  One of the biggest factors in having a great time on a cruise is a simple thought: It’s what you make of it. With that being said, here are 5 keys to having a memorable cruise vacation.



Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – It’s bound to happen, there is some miscommunication among the ship’s staff and things aren’t actually how you expected them to be or how you asked. I am amazed at how many times I read accounts of people who just came back from a cruise and complain about how some minor details just about “ruined” their cruise.

Don’t let minor things ruin your cruise.  My wife and I recently took a cruise for our anniversary.
When we arrived at our stateroom, the room was made up with twin beds instead of a queen. We got a good laugh out of it as my wife said they must have given us the “Dick Van Dyke” special.  We let our room steward know and she fixed it while we were at dinner that first night.

If you ever have any problems with the service with either with your room steward or dining room server, talk to the maitre d’ or the hotel manager before asking for your automatic gratuities to be removed.  Usually all it takes is a quick talk with them and things will be made right.
Don’t let the actions of other cruisers ruin your cruise – John Heald, the senior cruise director for Carnival Cruise Line, recently asked his Facebook fans if a young couple came into the dining room on formal night in blue jeans, does it: A) Not bother you at all, B) Put you in a grumpy mood, or C) Spoils formal night for you and makes you very upset. While the overwhelming majority responded with A, I was surprised how many chose B and even a few said C that it would ruin their night.

I once saw a teenager walk into the dining room on formal night wearing a t-shirt and ballcap.  I could have it bother me but why should I? I was having dinner with my wife and that is all that really mattered.

Some cruisers will call the ship a boat, others cut in line at the buffet, and some pile in the elevators without allowing those that are already in it to get out. Don’t let the actions of a few other cruisers ruin your cruise.

Be Friendly – Passengers on cruise ships are among the friendliest people you will ever meet. Take time to reciprocate their friendliness. It’s amazing what a smile and “How are you doing today?” make.  Being friendly to other passengers and crew members go a long way in helping you enjoy your cruise.

Have a Positive Attitude –  You are on a cruise, which beats any day back home in the office. Having a positive attitude will bring optimism to those around you and will give you a better cruise experience.  This goes hand in hand with point #1, don’t sweat the small stuff.  No one wants to be around someone who is always complaining.

Enjoy Every Moment – Take time to enjoy each day at sea.  When you are back home, cruise fever will begin to set in and you will be wishing you were back on the ship. Don’t be in constant hurry rushing from bingo, trivia, karaoke, shows, and whatever else is going on around the ship.  Kick back, relax, and enjoy your stress free cruise.

When you are on a cruise you have a few options to consider when it comes to breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Some people do not realize that dinner is not the only meal you can eat in the main dining room.  You can eat lunch or breakfast in the main dining room (usually) and the food can be quite good.  It just takes longer to eat since it is a more formal setting so many people just opt for the buffet for a quick bite to eat before they hit the pool or basketball court.



Here are a few tips for eating in the main dining room on a cruise ship:

Order what you want as early as possible

The later in the meal that you order something the longer it will be before it gets to your table, and if there is a show that starts right after dinner you may need to hurry.  It’s easy to see someone else’s dish and then want the same thing and ask for it, but remember that this delays the whole dinner process, especially if you are eating with a bunch of other people.  The wait staff likes to keep everyone on the same course at the same time, so if you order another entrée while everyone else is waiting for dessert it might delay dessert for everyone.  So if it looks good in the menu just order it at the beginning.

Pace yourself or keep to that diet

It’s easy to gain a good 10-15 pounds during a cruise, but just because there is food all around you doesn’t mean you have to eat it.  Just pick out some of the best foods and leave the rest.  Of course, you can always hit the gym during the cruise to try to shed some of those pounds, but most people never live out those good intentions when vowing to hit the gym every night.  Fortunately, most cruise lines offer a menu for those wanting to go light on the calories.  There is usually a vegan section of the  menu as well to keep you on tract if you are trying to maintain a certain diet.

Get to know your wait staff

These are some of the nicest people you will meet.  They will be taking care of you for the duration of the cruise so make sure you take care of them as well.  Be friendly to them and leave an appropriate tip at the end of the cruise if you feel it was deserved.  You will meet wait staff from all over the world and it can be a lot of fun hearing their stories as you get to know them.

Request a table for two well in advanced

There are not many tables for 2 in the main dining room because they want to seat as many people as possible in the room.  So if you are on your honeymoon or just want to be able to eat privately with your special someone, make sure you ask for that well in advance of the cruise.  These tables always fill up fast.

Don’t feel you are stuck with the dinner time you have chosen

There are usually two dinner times for each cruise ship.  One is around 5:30 pm and the other is around 8:30 pm or even 9:00 pm on some ships.  If you choose the 2^nd seating dinner but then realize that you would prefer the first one, you can usually switch without too much complication.  Only if that seating time is already full will you have any issues.  There is no sense in feeling stuck with that seating time if it does not fit in with your cruise schedule.  Most cruise lines also offer a form of “Anytime Dining” that allows you to eat whenever you would like.

You can switch tables if there is a problem

Many people do not realize that they can also switch tables.  If you are not getting along with the people at your table or there is any other reason for wanting a different table just talk to the Maitre d’ and he will take care of it for you.  I have found that it’s usually a pleasant experience meeting new people and getting to know them throughout the week, but if you are going to switch tables you should do it the first day if possible.

Hurricane season is officially from June 1^st  to November 30^th, and during those times hurricanes will sometimes change the itineraries for cruise ships in the Caribbean and the Bahamas.  So what happens if there is a hurricane or tropical storm during the same dates as your cruise?
First you need to know that cruise lines do everything in their power to make sure the “cruise goes on”.   Only in rare cases will the cruise actually be cancelled by the cruise line.  These ships can travel at speeds over 21 knots so they can usually outrun any hurricanes or tropical depressions and just go around any inclement weather.

You may face some choppy seas

The seas can be rough for anyone who gets sea sick easily, so make sure you carry some Dramamine with you.  The bigger ships will not rock as much, but when you are really close to a big storm you will feel movement.  This should not last long though, as the captain will try to get as far away from the storm as quickly as possible.

The seas will not always be rough when you are sailing around a hurricane, however, and it’s definitely not as bad as maybe you have seen in the movies.  If the weather gets too rough the shows will be cancelled, though, and the pools will be emptied.  It’s definitely an adventure cruising in choppy seas, but if you can just hold on you might even get an extra couple days out of your trip.

Your itinerary could change

If the hurricane is going to hit one of the ports you were going to be visiting, there may be a change in plans.  It is best just to have a good attitude about the situation since you really can’t do anything about it anyway.  You might visit a different port or even stay at a port for an extra day while the weather clears.

Do I get a refund?

With most cruise lines, you will only get a full refund if the entire cruise is cancelled.  This is a very rare thing because cruise lines do everything they can to keep out of harm’s way and sail around storms.

However, if you booked a 7 day cruise and there is a hurricane coming in during that same time you might get your trip shortened by a couple days (cruise lines usually give out compensation for the shorter cruises).  At the same time, the people that are on the ship when a storm is coming in might get an extra 2 days on the ship (and they usually only have to pay for 2 days worth of tips).

Be prepared with travel insurance

A hurricane might not affect your trip at all or it might make your cruise miserable.  If you do lose a couple days of your vacation or have your flight cancelled because of the weather and therefore can’t make your cruise you will want to have travel insurance to be compensated.

Many people who are nervous about cruising wonder how to not get sick on a cruise.  This is probably the number one reason why some people will never go on a cruise.  But ships are more stable than ever and there are many ways to combat seasickness.  While there are no guarantees that you will not get seasick though, this article will cover a few tips for making sure you can keep your composure on the high seas and enjoy every minute of your vacation.



Seasickness is caused by your body’s inner ear trying to keep up with the balancing act of unfamiliar motion.  Equilibrium is all controlled in the inner ear, and when you are seeing things moving that are “supposed” to be still, it can cause undue stress on your brain and cause nausea to set in.  Sometimes it takes people a few days to get their “sea legs” and nausea goes away completely.

Tips to avoid getting seasick on a  cruise ship

• Get a cabin in the middle of the ship and as low as you can go.  The forward and aft of the ship will have the most movement as the ship barrels through the water, so the middle of the ship will feel less of these extremes.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Keep something in your stomach.  You might be afraid to eat anything, but just avoid spicy foods and make sure your tank is not on empty.
• Get as much fresh air as possible on one of the top decks.
• Look out over the forward part of the ship.  This helps many people get acclimated to the motion of the ship in the water and helps to train the brain to stop the nausea.
• Keep an eye fixed on the horizon.  Remember, your brain can use the horizon as a point of reference so it is not so confused and triggers the motion sickness.
• Try to get a room with at least a window as well, as not seeing the water is usually worse than seeing it.

Remedies for avoiding cruise motion sickness

You should always consult with your doctor before trying any medications or special homemade remedies just to make sure that you will not see any adverse reactions.

• Dramamine.  This is probably the most popular over the counter drug for preventing sea sickness, but it can also make you drowsy.  There is a non-drowsy Dramamine but many people find that it still makes you feel weird.  Still, it’s better than being sea sick.  And after a few days you may find you no longer need it.
• The Scopolamine Patch.  Some people rave about this patch and it’s supposed to work really well.  You need a prescription for it, and the only side effect most people see is a dry mouth.  But there is plenty to drink on the ship so no worries there.
• Bonine.  This is another drug a little like Dramamine and should be taken 8 hours before you sail.  Some people recommend taking it the night before your cruise and then again that morning so you will not feel so drowsy.

Home remedies for avoiding cruise motion sickness

• Ginger.  If you are drinking Ginger Ale, make sure there is actually ginger in it.  Some of the new soft drinks just use ginger flavors.  Some people take ginger pills and others eat ginger snaps.  Either way, it should help.
• Peppermint candy or tea.  This helps to relieve the nausea so it’s really a remedy for the symptoms of seasickness and not really the cause.
• Saltine crackers.  Some people swear by them, so hey, it’s worth a shot.
• Wrist bands.  There are certain wristbands that are supposed to push down on your pressure points to stop you from getting motion sickness.  Some people can even read in a moving car with them on.
• Eating green apples will also help keep seasickness at bay.

Remember that if you do get really sick on a cruise, there is always a nurse and medical staff on board to assist you. This is where having cruise or travel insurance can really pay off.

Certain cruise destinations are better for people who get motion sickness

If you go on a cruise across the Atlantic, chances are you are going to experience a lot more movement in the water due to the cold fronts and weather changes in the ocean.  So for first time cruisers worries about getting seasick I recommend taking a cruise to the Caribbean where the waters are usually calm.

Newer cruise ships have built in stabilizers

Cruise ships are bigger than ever grossing well over 100,000 in tonnage in more new ships.  The Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas gross over 220,000 in tonnage and are over 1,100 feet long and 200 feet wide in some places.  These ships have special stabilizers that help keep the ship from rocking.

Most of the time you can’t even feel the ships moving, especially when the weather is nice.  On the rare occasion that you have some weather the wave might make the ship move a little, but captains usually try to avoid any kind of weather and find you a nice sunny part of the ocean to enjoy your getaway.

Think about it, these ships could not have ice skating rinks on them with live performances if the ships were rocking back and forth.  On my first cruise I was shocked at how still everything seemed.  Once in a while you might feel some movement, but the technology is getting better all the time, and the bigger the ship the more stable it will be.
